CT PHCC Proactive in Landa House Project
At a special town
meeting in August, Griswold CT voters unanimously agreed to waive
building and demolition fees associated with rebuilding. Vendors
offered materials for free or at or below cost. Contractors
brought equipment to the site and volunteers spent whatever time
they had - nights, weekends - on the property. Bruno Hayn, owner
of Home Designs by Bruno, and several others created a foundation
to help people who suddenly find themselves in need.
Bruno, along with a
group of business owners and volunteers who played a leading role
in rebuilding the Girard family’s home on ABC’s “Extreme
Makeover: Home Edition” wanted to rebuild the home for the Landa
family in Griswold. Landa 615 is a division of the 501(c)(3) non
profit organization Extreme Home 615 Foundation. Here is an
excerpt from the Landa 615 Blog: “While the Extreme build
required six weeks of preparation to build a home in just 106
hours, Team Landa 615 has been able to take its time to build the
Landa home. Over the past four months the team has diligently
focused its time, effort, and energy on fundraising events. Each
of the events was successful due to the volunteer support we
received and we are so thankful for YOUR help.”

Dino Tudisca, owner
of Exterior Solutions, a home remodeling firm is a lead project
manager. Dino noted that “The Connecticut PHCC has been
terrific. They’ve been a big help in getting plumbing
contractors, material and labor for this project.” The Granite
Group also contributed plumbing material. Thames Valley Winnelson
provided a Quietside tankless water heater. Plumbing contractors
involved in the project are: Cawley Plumbing and Heating; Curries
Plumbing Heating and Cooling; All Phase Heating and Cooling and
Taylor Heating and A/C, HVAC contractors working on the project
include: MEGA Mechanical Systems; and Shamrock Sheet Metal.
Here is the Landa
family story. In the early morning hours of Sunday June 28th, the
Landa family, of Griswold, CT lost their home, their possessions,
and 7 of their 8 family dogs to fire. Kyle, the 20 year old son of
Dawne and Dave Landa, awoke his quadriplegic father and dragged
him from the upper level of their raised ranch to safety outside
of their home, before collapsing from smoke inhalation and burns
to his neck, and hands.
Dawne Landa, in her
own act of heroism, dragged both her husband and her son away from
the burning home while waiting for the emergency vehicles to
arrive. The emergency crews were unable to save the home as they
focused their attention on the Landa family. This was not the
first tragedy the Landa family had endured. In the summer of 2008,
Kyle rescued his unconscious father from the bottom of their
swimming pool, after suffering an accident which left David
paralyzed. “People have come together to help a family in need.
But what we are learning is that while we are helping our
neighbors, our friends, and strangers, we are helping ourselves.
We are changing the life of the Landa family, but in the process,
we are changing our own lives!” – Team Landa.
