Hawn Heating & Air Conditioning Celebrates 80 Years.

Much has changed in the world of HVAC since the 1930s, but for Hawn Heating & Air Conditioning of Rochester, N.Y., much has remained constant. Founded in 1931 by Allen D. Hawn, the company has grown and changed with the times, but has never lost sight of Allen’s principles. Now celebrating their eightieth year in business, Doug Hawn, grandson of Allen and current company vice-president, attributes the company’s success to a basic tenet.

“Our company philosophy has remained very simple,” said Hawn. “It is to provide the very best products and services to all our customers, all of the time, at a fair price.” Hawn said that philosophy is at the forefront of everything Hawn Heating & Air Conditioning does as a company, and the sentiment is echoed in the business’s mission statement.

“Our company mission statement, which is painted right on the wall of our office and showroom, reads – Hawn Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. is a people-focused organization that is: committed to providing exceptional service to our customers; committed to sustained growth over the long haul; committed to showing appreciation to our dedicated employees; committed to contributing to the communities in which we operate; committed to supporting and expanding on environmentally acceptable programs; and committed to providing an acceptable rate of return for our owners,” Hawn said, adding, “Every day we live this out by the way we conduct ourselves.”

Integrity is important to Hawn, who employs a team of 25 and serves greater Rochester and Monroe County. “The main reasons for our success include customer and employee loyalty, a strong sense of business ethics, treating people right the first time, and when we do make a mistake, admitting it and fixing it. People like to know they’re being treated fairly.” Hawn, who said he decided to work in HVAC because it was a “great opportunity to continue the family legacy and help people lead more comfortable lives”, is open to new ideas and new applications in the world of HVAC. “We take great pride in history and tradition, but we’re also forward-thinking,” he said. “HVAC changes every day, and staying current is important.” The company constantly monitors the market for new products that are both planet and consumer friendly, such as Carrier® Infinity products, which contain Puron, an environmentally sound refrigerant, and are known for their energy efficiency.

Hawn Heating & Air Conditioning offers a variety of services to their customers, such as: duct cleaning; energy audits; water heater installation; furnace, air conditioner and boiler replacement and installation; gas fi replace installation and service; and annual maintenance. “Maintenance plans are the backbone of our business,” Hawn indicated. “The tough economy during the last few years has been a challenge, and made it more important than ever to stick to our core business and continue to do what we do best.” Another way Hawn has worked toward success is to provide their customers with high-quality equipment and exemplary service. “We sell Carrier equipment, and we’re a Factory Authorized Dealer,” Hawn said. “Carrier products are important to our business, because the name recognition really helps to sell the product. And, the support we receive from Carrier in training our people has been helpful.” In fact, employee training is one of Hawn’s selling points. “We consider our people, and their level of professionalism, unique in the world of HVAC,” Hawn said. “Most of our technicians are NATE certifi ed, our duct cleaning technician is NADCA certifi ed, and we have a certifi ed BPI auditor on staff. We take great pride in our professional standards and that our people are fully trained to do an awesome job.”

Hawn said that the high standard of professionalism is evident in everything the company does, including their showroom. “We have a nice venue for our customers,” Hawn said, indicating that their showroom is clean, modern, and features a working fi replace as well as a wide variety of equipment. “Customers like to see what they’re getting. They like to have the opportunity to look the equipment over and learn about it. Having a full line-up in our showroom allows for that,” Hawn said. In addition to their business, the Hawn family is also actively involved in the HVAC community. The Hawns serve on several boards, including the ACCA, the BPCA and the BCP. Allen T. Hawn, company president and father of Doug, is an ACCA Hall of Fame inductee. “It was a nice honor, to be recognized by his peers for always keeping professionalism at the forefront,” Hawn said.
